A tragic lady roams Speke Hall in search of her child.
Wander through Speke Hall and you may encounter a mysterious, grey figure, wandering around the grounds in search of the child she accidentally killed.
Soon after the Reformation, the Royalist Speke Hall residents were turned upon by the nearby townsfolk. Ransacking the castle, a lady of the house clambered to a window, where she resolved to save herself and her child by jumping into the mote.
As the riotous mob neared her bedroom, the lady opened the window and threw her child towards the shallow mote. Misjudging the distance in her panicked state, the child was dashed against the ground, certain to die of the injuries. Desperately regretting her rash decision, the lady then hurled herself to her own death from the window.
It is said the lady in grey still wanders Speke Hall, her never-ending search for her long lost child continuing. You may want to quicken your step if you hear the rattle of a child’s toy or the rocking of a cradle, for the wail of the child is soon to follow!
